THE MOCHILA BAG

One of a Kind

Regular price $150
Description

This mochila begins with agave—fique, as it is known in the Sierra Nevada—a plant that grows wild across the jungle slopes, with some towering overhead. Its fiber is stripped from the leaves by hand, then cleaned, dried, and twisted into cord before the first row is woven, giving the finished bag its firmer body and distinctive grain—a sturdy, textured weave built to last.

Each bag takes shape from a small circle, spiraling without end—a memory of how the Mother first wove the world. Its color comes from the fique itself—sienna and russet—with deeper browns derived from other barks and plants. The bag is woven slowly by hand over weeks, the work itself a kind of prayer.

No two mochilas are alike. The weaver works as she goes about her day, so each bag carries small marks of that life and of the hands that made it. For the Indigenous peoples of the Sierra, weaving represents an ancient truth: that all of nature and all beings are connected.
