THE MOCHILA BAG

Woven in a single continuous piece from 100% heirloom Kogui cotton, each mochila is spun and worked entirely by hand, giving the cloth a dense, sturdy weave with the slight irregularities of true handwork. A rounded base allows the bag to stand open, while the wide top makes it easy to reach inside. Its long, handwoven strap is designed to be worn across the body, as the mochila has been carried in the Sierra Nevada for generations.

Each begins at the base as a small circle that opens into an endless spiral—the weavers’ echo of how Mother Earth first wove the world. Turned upside down, the mochila becomes the mountains themselves: the snowcapped peaks, the rivers, all of nature held in one form. The palette draws from the Sierra’s most sacred colors: pure white for peace with nature and the soul; black for Aluna—the soul, the essence, the darkness before sunrise where all things begin; and yellow, drawn from turmeric gathered on the mountain, a sacred color for the Kogui that represents the Sierra itself. Together, these colors hold a balance of dark and light, and the abundance of their jungle home in the mountains.

Woven by Rosenda slowly over weeks, no two are alike. With use, the cotton softens and the bag gradually shapes itself to its owner. The women weave as they go about their days, so each bag may carry small marks—dust from the Sierra, ash from the fire—traces of the weaver’s life in the jungle. These are part of its story, not flaws.

For the Kogui, weaving holds an old truth: everything is connected—humans, animals, rivers, forests, and mountains—each a thread in the same cloth. To carry a mochila is to feel connected to that whole.
