THE MOCHILA BAG

One of a Kind

Description

These are the colorful mochilas—bands and blocks of color, from soft naturals to vivid brights, with no two combinations the same. The weavers tell it this way: when the earth was made, there was only water and land, then life began to emerge—the trees, the sea—and with it came all the colors. The colored mochilas tell that story, of life developing on Earth.

Woven entirely by hand by the Indigenous weavers of the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta, each singular bag is made from fibers grown and gathered on the mountain, carrying the texture, weight, and slight irregularities of true handwork. Its rounded base and wide top opening give the bag its form, while a long woven strap allows it to be worn crossbody. Each bag begins as a small circle that widens into an endless spiral, in memory of the Mother’s first weaving of the world. Turned upside down, the mochila becomes the mountains themselves—the peaks, the rivers, all of nature held in one form.

Weeks in the making, each bag bears something of the life that made it: a mark here, a variation there, the signature of a single pair of hands—a physical reminder of the interconnectedness of all beings and forms.
