Woven Wisdom - Kenya
All of our pieces are sourced and handcrafted in Kenya according to the highest ethical standards and reflecting a deep respect for traditional techniques and form.
Our sustainable cotton is grown from seed by smallholder farmers in Lamu and woven by Sun Flag, one of Kenya’s oldest independent textile manufacturers. The garments and hats are hand-sewn by Soko, a woman-owned and run sustainable clothing manufacturer in Malindi, which prioritizes social and environmental responsibility and fair wages. And our bags are constructed by Ikwetta, a small women-led artisan initiative based in
Nairobi.
The intricate glass beadwork is crafted by two women’s collectives in Northern Kenya. The ranger jackets, shirts and hats, along with the Kenya bags, are created by Samburu “mamas” in partnership with Samburu Trust. It is a skill passed down from mother to child, with each design and color telling a unique story. For more than 20 years, the women-led Trust’s beading project has helped the mamas earn a livelihood while supporting their families and communities, empowering girls and women, and affording them the freedom to live as they choose while sustaining their ancestral traditions. The Manyatta bags are the work of the Maasai mamas of the Lekurri Group Ranch, who bead in their manyattas using traditional methods refined with modern innovations, such as a distinctive double-threading technique. Every piece supports food security, children’s education and independence for the women who choose how to direct their earnings.
As every item is one-of-a-kind, you may notice slight differences—each a testament to the craft and personal touch of its maker.
